Franzlalm - Russbach

Hiking and walking trail 4.8 km easy/medium

Route no. 46, approx. 1.5 hours

Following an ascent on the Hornbahn railway, the route runs down into the valley past the Beschneiungsteich lake and on to the Franzlalm hut (catered) and from here to the district of Gseng in Russbach. From here, walk back along the old highway towards the Hornbahn valley station.

Edtalmhütte hut

Pushchair-friendly walking and hiking trail, 6 km, easy

Route no. 46, approx. 1 hour

Following the ascent on the Hornbahn railway, savour the dreamy surroundings during a walk to the Edtalmhütte hut which takes you past meadows, woods and pastures. Enjoy a culinary treat in the form of an Alpine snack on the sun terrace of the Edtalm hut and recharge your batteries while being entertained by some traditional music. The route from the Hornbahn mountain station to the Edtalmhütte or back can be enjoyed on the Ameisenexpress train.

Hornspitze - Schattauhöhe - Russbach

Hiking and walking trail 8 km, medium

Route no. 45, 46, approx. 2 hours

Following an ascent on the Hornbahn railway, the route leads downhill to the artificial snow reservoir and from here, follow signs for the ‘Horn Rundweg’. This tour is a secret tip for those who enjoy berries and mushrooms (note: this automatically increases the walk time! And not all mushrooms are edible ;))) Then walk via the Alte Pass Gschütt-Strasse to Russbach.

Route no. 47b, approx. 3.5 hours

Following an ascent on the Hornbahn railway, this inviting walk leads to the Edtalmhütte hut and on to the Zwieselalmhütte hut. From here, it takes you across the Herrenweg trail and back to the Edtalmhütte hut. The route from the Hornbahn mountain station to the Edtalmhütte hut can be completed using the Ameisenexpress train. This shortens the walk time by 1 hour (depending on route).

Route no. 46a, approx. 5 hours

Following an ascent on the Hornbahn railway, this trail leads to the Edtalmhütte hut. Here you can recharge your batteries before continuing on via the Herrenweg trail to the Pass Gschütt and via the Alte Pass Gschütt Strasse back to Russbach. You can also take the post bus from the Pass Gschütt to Russbach – this shortens the walk time by around 1 hour.

Hornspitz circular route

Route no. 47a, approx. 15 mins
Following an ascent on the Hornbahn railway, the trail takes you to the  Hornspitz peak from where you can enjoy magnificent views of the Dachstein massif, Gosaukamm ridge, Hohe Tauern, Tennengebirge and Watzmann mountains.

Ameisensee - Russbach

Hiking and walking trail, 14 km easy/medium

Route no. 47,  approx. 2.5 hours

Following an ascent on the Hornbahn railway, the route leads you towards the Edtalm hut and on to the Ameisensee lake. From here, follow signs towards the Gseng district of Russbach. Then walk along the old highway back to the valley station of the Hornbahn.

Edtalm - Zwieselalmhöhe - Gosau

Route no. 46, short steep ascent, approx. 3 hours

Following an ascent on the Hornbahn railway, the route leads you towards the Edtalmhütte hut. The short steep climb up to the Zwieselalmhöhe peak is rewarded with breath-taking views. From here, it’s on to the mountain station of the Gosaukammbahn cable car. Descent on the Gosaukammbahn cable car is possible or else walk down to the Gosausee lake (route no. 20). The return journey to Russback can be completed by bus.
